ABOUT REGISTRATION
Why are there only four sessions for 2008?
Two reasons:
1) A majority of Texas school districts have shifted their school calendars so that students now return to school at the end of August (as opposed to the middle), and are released the first week of June (as opposed to the third week of May). The Camp decided to shift its first session from the usual Memorial Day weekend, to the first week of June.

2) It's a once every four years kind of thing, but with Olympic Trials beginning June 29, that's where we needed to end our sessions as our coaches and potential Olympians will be headed. Once Trials conclude and the U.S. Olympic Team has been selected, our head coaches are pretty much out of Austin until the conclusion of the Olympic Games. Hopefully, we should be able to offer additional sessions in 2009.

How do I register for camp?
The quickest way to secure a spot in camp is to register on-line! On-line registration locks in your spot instantly upon payment! Click HERE to get started! Once registered, you will receive confirmation instantly via e-mail. Required forms will follow in the camp pre-registration packet or you can download them from the website when available - typically towards the end of January or early February.

You can also download a copy of the application form from this web site and mail or fax it in. If you have trouble downloading any forms, please email the camp, call us at 512-475-8652, or write us at Longhorns Swim Camp, Departments of Intercollegiate Athletics, The University of Texas at Austin, P.O. Box 7399, Austin, TX 78713-7399.

What will hold a spot for my camper?
Registering on-line or sending in the application form and NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of $150 per session (checks made out to “UT Swim Camp” or credit card) will hold your spot.
A confirmation packet will be mailed to you in late January or early February. You may request e-mail confirmation of your session on the registration form. Campers registering on-line will receive immediate confirmation of enrollment. Final camp fees are due by a May 1 postmark. Once full payment and all medical forms have been received, your spot in camp is secure. Balances received after May 1 will be charged a $25 late fee. Due to high demand, balances not paid by May 17, 2008 will forfeit camp space.

How soon should I register?
Register as soon as possible! Camp sessions have closed earlier and earlier since 1999.
Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
No phone registrations will be taken. We sold out by January 23 in 2007!

Should I request a second session preference on the registration form? What if all my choices are sold out?
YES! If your first choice is closed when your application is received, every effort will be made to put you in your second (or third, fourth, etc.) choice.

Once a session is sold out, it will not be available thru the on-line registration process.

If all your choices are sold out and you sent a check to our bank, a refund check will be issued by the University of Texas. This take 3-4 weeks to process and mail. Credit card information will be destroyed. Your application will be kept and added to the next year's mailing database so that you receive early registration information.

How soon will I receive confirmation of my session?
Campers who register on-line will receive an e-mail confirmation immediately thru e-mail! Campers who submit their forms via U.S. mail or fax will have their confirmation letters sent out with their pre-registration packets in late Janaury to early February. We have to wait for the updated medical forms from the University of Texas, and they are typically ready after the first of the year.

We are more than happy to confirm receipt of a fax and the session a camper is placed in. Please send an e-mail to the camp at longhornswimcamp@athletics.utexas.edu, and we will respond as soon as possible.

Do you keep waitlists in case of cancellations?
Yes. Waitlists are kept to a maximum of 10 spots per session. Cancellations are rare, but do happen. You may request to be placed on a waitlist by contacting the camp director. You will also need to provide a drop date from the waitlist (how long you are willing to wait on the list), as well as a completed camp registration form (no deposit required).

Are there any other optional fees I need to know about?
Yes. If your camper is flying in or out of Austin, the camp charges $25 for one-way and $35 for round-trip airport ground transportation. If your camper is staying more than one session, and staying in the dorm, there is a $65 charge for each weekend stay. This includes room and board, supervision, and Saturday morning training (if facility time is available). There is also an additional $65 per night fee for campers who need to stay nights in the dorm due to travel, but are not staying additional sessions. Renting a locker (combination lock included) at the Texas Swimming Center is $37 per session.

ABOUT REFUNDS
What are the refund procedures?
The $150 deposit is non-refundable for any reason at any time. Cancellations prior to May 1 will receive a full refund of camp fees less the $150 deposit. There are no refunds or credits of any portion of the camp fee after May 1 for reasons other than documented medical conditions. There are no refunds for a "no show" or if a camper leaves early due to homesickness. There are no refunds once a session has started. A camper who switches from the resident camp to day camp after their session has started will not receive a refund or credit for the difference.

Camp merchandise is not eligible for refunds after April 11, 2008. Campers who cancel their merchandise order or session after April 11 will have their merchadise shipped to them starting June 1.

What should I do if I find out I cannot attend my camp session?
As a courtesy, please notify the camp immediately if you are unable to attend. We do keep waiting lists, and this can allow someone else to attend camp. Sorry, the camp cannot issue credit toward the next year's camp.

If I cannot attend camp, can I try to fill my spot with a friend or teammate?
No. The space belongs to the Camp and cannot be switched out with another person. We do maintain wait lists for those trying to attend, and this is camp procedure. It's also the fairest method, as switching with someone is similar to cutting in line.

How are refunds processed?
Depending on the method of payment, refunds are processed in one of two ways:

1) Fees paid by check or money order are issued a refund check from the University of Texas Accounting department. This process typically takes 3-4 weeks from the time the refund request is submitted.

2) Fees paid by credit card are issued a credit back to the original card used for payment.

ABOUT TRAINING
Does my swimmer really need to have competitive experience to attend?
We highly recommend that every camper coming into the Longhorns Swim Camp has some form of competitive experience prior to attending. Campers will get the most from the camp if they have been involved in a competitive swimming program of some kind - summer league, high school, YMCA, USA Swimming, etc. If you have any questions about whether you believe the program is right for your swimmer, please call Jon Alter, camp director, at (512) 475-8652 or e-mail: longhornswimcamp@athletics.utexas.edu.

Are all the coaches listed really at the camp?
Absolutely. Head coaches Eddie Reese, Kim Brackin, Kris Kubik, and Jim Henry lead at least one camp session per day. Josh Davis coaches the final morning workout on Friday. 2004 Olympic gold medalists and Neil Walker, Ian Crocker, Aaron Piersol, and Brendan Hansen will be coaching one afternoon stroke session each week along with a head coach. Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry is a featured guest speaker, and additional guests may also include Olympic, USA National Team, World Championship, Pan-Am, and Pan-Pac team members. Our coaching staff is very involved in the entire camp.

*NOTE for 2008 sessions*

Due to his head Olympic coaching duties for the 2008 Games, Eddie Reese's camp schedule has been modified from previous camp years. Eddie will be present and work with campers on Sunday evenings session, start one to three of the morning training sessions, as well as lead a Q&A session with the campers on Friday mornings. We hope everyone understands, as we feel this will allow him to not only fully prepare his athletes for Olympic Trials, but also lead Team USA to its full potential at the Olympic Games. Please contact Jon Alter, the camp director, if you have any questions.

Who makes up the staff?
Aside from the head coaches, 16-20 experienced, mature adults compose the counselor/coach staff at camp. These coaches come with high recommendations, and are either coaching at the high school, club or collegiate level, or have finished their NCAA eligibility as collegiate swimmers and are looking to get into coaching as a profession. We also employ members of the University of Texas mens' and womens' swim teams, and post-graduate athletes to work with the campers on a daily basis. The counselors live in the dorm with the campers, and provide a first line of defense if they need help of any kind. All counselors are at least 21 years old, have completed at least 2 years of higher education, have certifications in first aid, CPR, and lifeguarding / safety training for swim coaches, and have passed a security background check performed by the University of Texas Human Resources department. There are typically two to four staff members living on each camp floor at the dorm. It is our goal to provide a safe, fun, and exciting environment where campers can learn and be excited about their sport, while meeting people from all over the United States and abroad.

What is a typical day like?
Campers swim three times per day (Monday–Thursday). The morning session is the true “training” session of the day. After a break for lunch, the afternoon session consists of an hour-long technique session in the water focusing on two strokes, followed by two classroom sessions — one on technique, the other a video viewing of races from the Olympics, Olympic trials, or NCAAs. After an afternoon break (with optional activities offered) and dinner, one more session is held at the pool, focusing on the other two strokes, videotaping, and RELAYS! Upon return to the dorm, evening activities are offered, and campers are to be in their rooms by 10 p.m., with room checks at 10:15 p.m.

You can download a camp schedule HERE.

How are campers grouped?
We group campers based on their age at camp, and their submitted 100-yard freestyle time. While we understand that not everyone is a 100 freestyler, it is the "common ground" that allows us to group swimmers on the first night of camp. We do make changes if warranted, but we must also maintain managable groups within the camp. Campers must give their assigned group a try on Monday morning. This also gives them their schedule for the first full day of camp. There are no group changes made on Sunday evening. The Camp makes no guarantee that friends / siblings will be in the same group.

What if my 100-yard freestyle time has changed since I registered for camp?
Just notify the camp office with your new time. You can call - (512) 475-8652 or e-mail: longhornswimcamp@athletics.utexas.edu.
The time we have on file on the first day of camp is the time we use to group the campers unless we are notified of an update. We understand that times improve tremendously and frequently from the time a camper has registered for camp, and we do our best to have our groups be as evenly matched as possible. But, that depends on the information we have in front of us, some of which may be months old and outdated since registration. Please help us in keeping your campers 100 freestyle time current and up to date.

What are the workouts like?
The morning session consists of an hour of dryland, weight training, or games, depending on age and group. It is our goal during this time to introduce proper technique and new exercises to campers. This is followed by one to two hours of long course training, again depending on age and group. The coaching staff believes in exposing campers to all forms of training — sprint, distance, IM, etc. The afternoon and evening sessions are technique based with one of the head coaches and an Olympian leading the afternoon session. In the evening, campers are broken into smaller groups and work on the two strokes not worked on in the afternoon. All four strokes, starts, and turns are covered.

Do you offer elite training sessions?
The camp is open to campers of all levels of swimming ability and ages 8-18.
However, if a camper is at a level where coaches Reese, Brackin, Kubik, or Henry determne they would benefit from it, the camper may be invited to participate in optional elite training sessions held throughout the camp. These workouts are designed to challenge the camper and mimic a collegiate level workout. Campers still participate in the stroke sessions designed for all campers.

Campers must meet the minimum age requirement of 14 years old, and it's recommended that the camper have competitive experience in USA Swimming or at the high school level. Head coaches have the final decision on acceptance and training schedule upon arrival to camp. To be considered for elite training sessions, please complete the Elite Training Sessions Information Form available on the Registration Page, and forward to the camp. Final decisions are made upon arrival at camp.

Campers that elect to participate in elite training sessions as a part of their camp experience should be ready for an intensive, exciting experience, and be in great physical condition prior to arriving at camp. Please direct any questions regarding elite training sessions to Jon Alter, camp director.

What is the ratio of campers to coaches?
Morning sessions are a little higher — between 12:1 to 15:1 due to it primarily being a training session. Afternoon and evening sessions find the ratio dropping to between 6:1 to 7:1 for more individual feedback and attention.

Do you do video analysis of the campers strokes?
Yes. Campers are filemd both underwater and above-water once during the week, and immediately watch it with a coach who provides feedback. Due to time and space limitations at the Texas Swimming Center, individual videos are not sent home.

What equipment do campers need to bring?
Campers must bring suits, towels, WATER BOTTLE, and goggles for water sessions. Training equipment from home (kickboard, fins, etc.) should not be brought. For dryland and weight room sessions, shorts, t-shirt, and sturdy athletic shoes are required. A backpack works well for bringing things to and from the pool, and you will need a combination lock for using a locker at the Swim Center. Due to locker space and user groups at the Jamail Swim Center, campers may not leave their belongings in a locker during the day unless a camp session is running. Only campers who have rented lockers from the Texas Swim Center are able to leave belongings in their lockers overnight. Locker rental information is included in the pre-registration packet, and is available for purchase on-line or thru the registration form.

What if a camper has a pre-existing injury?
Camp is a physically demanding and challenging week, and campers should be in good physical condition prior to arrival. Please notify the Director prior to check-in if the injury has happened after the medical forms have been submitted. It is very important that we know any and all medical conditions a camper may have, or special situations that parents feel we should know about. We can substitute exercises or training sets to fit the situation as long as we are informed in advance, but in some cases, it is better to focus on recovery, and stay at home. These are handled on a case by case basis. Please help us to help your camper.

Do you have an Athletic Trainer on staff?
Yes. A licensed athletic trainer is at all pool sessions and living in the dorm.

What about medications?
Medications must be given to the camp staff at check-in with written directions, dosage amounts and times. This will be given to one of their group counselors or our athletic trainer, who will arrange times to help administer to the camper. If a camper is age appropriate, and responsible enough to self-administer, they may keep it in their room with permission from the Director (depending on type of medication). Inhalers may be brought out on deck during all training sessions. Controlled substances (Adderall, Ritaline, Concerta, etc.), regardless of age, must be given to the camp staff at check-in.

It is very helpful to put all medications in a zip-loc bag with the campers name written on it, and enclose directions on the type of medication, dosage, dosage times, and parent contact info.

What about Memorial Day and the Fourth of July holidays?
If camp is in session, it's a regular camp day for us! For 2008 - it doesn't apply!

ABOUT THE DORM
Will we need to bring linens and toiletries? Anything else?
Yes. All campers will need bed linens for an extra-long twin bed as well as a pillow. A sleeping bag also works well. Linens can be rented from the Dobie Center front desk for at least $15 (price subject to change annually). You will also need to send toiletries and two to three towels with your camper. Many campers bring appropriate games, cards, personal music players, snacks, and drinks to make their stay more comfortable. The camp is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Please leave expensive and/or sentimental items at home. Camp is not the place for them.

Anything we cannot bring?
Televisions, plug-in telephones, and microwaves are not allowed. Contraband items that have no place at camp: matches, lighters, knives, firearms, alcohol, rope, razor blades, tobacco products, illegal drugs, candles, fireworks, incense, etc. If it requires a second thought or question about whether it belongs at camp or not - it doesn't! Please contact the camp director with any questions on this. It's better to ask, then be sent home for having something you should not have in the first place!

What about cell phones?
Cell phones are permitted at camp. However, we caution sending them with your camper. If a camper becomes homesick, they can hinder more than help in the camp experience. Many campers will also call home first instead of receiving immediate help from a staff member, which lengthens the response time. Cell phones are ONLY to be used in the campers room, and are not allowed in the main lobby of the dorm, activities, or on walks to/from the pool. The Camp reserves the right to confiscate cell phones from campers who cannot follow this policy. If you feel a cell phone may be abused while at camp, please do not send one with your camper.

Will my child be supervised at all times?
YES! Every camper is assigned to a group overseen by two to four counselors, and there are also two to four staff members living on each camp floor. Dobie Center also has its own security staff, and everyone must show ID (nametags, wristbands, etc.) when entering the building after 10 p.m. All doors but the main entrance are locked after 10 p.m. Campers are always supervised at the dorm, field trips, walks to/from the pool, all pool and dryland sessions, and in the evenings. Campers are to be in their rooms at 10 p.m., with room checks performed at 10:15 p.m. We take the care and supervision of your child very seriously.

What if I lose my room key during camp?
There is a $20 fee for a lost key. This can be paid to the Director, or if the camper does not have the money, billed to the parents. If a key is lost, it should be reported right away, as making a new key does take time. There are no refunds for lost keys (even if they are found upon arrival at home - the new one has already been made).

How much spending money should I send with my camper?
Most campers bring between $50-100. All meals are provided, but there is a food court in the mall under Dobie Center if they wish to buy a snack for later, order a pizza, or buy a souvenir from the Jamail Swim Center store or Longhorns Ltd.. Camp provides a bank to hold campers’ money for them during the week. It is open from 12–1 p.m. during lunch. Any money not used will be returned during checkout on Friday. The camp is not responsible for the loss of money not in the camp bank, nor do we police the spending habits of campers.

What is the difference between a double room and a suite?
A double room holds two campers, while a suite is two double rooms linked by a living area. All rooms have a private bath, sink, and refrigerator. Suite requests are welcomed, but not guaranteed. The Camp does not know it's assigned floors until mid-May. Different floors have differing numbers of suites (if any). If a suite request is not honored, we do our best to place campers rooms as close to one another as possible.

What about roommate requests?
The camp welcomes roommate and suitemate requests, but does not guarantee them. All requests must match and be complete. Roommates/suitemates cannot be more than two years apart in age. Rooming assignments are done one week prior to the start of a session. If your camper is attending as part of an odd-numbered group, the Camp reserves the right to add a third bed to certain rooms. If in a suite, two people would room together, and the third would take potluck. If not in a suite, every effort will be made to place campers as close together as possible. It is recommended that roommates and suitemates send in their applications at the same time. Don’t wait too long though, as your session may close. Siblings that are more than two years apart and wish to room together are encouraged to try rooming apart as this is part of the camp experience. Please understand we try to keep our camp floors as closely grouped by age as possible.

Roommates/suitemates who request one another and are more that two years apart will be split and placed with another camper who meets the age criteria.

What if campers don’t get along as roommates?
Once rooming assignments are made, there is no changing of rooms at any time. Roommates that are having disagreements are encouraged to seek out their floor or group counselor before calling home. The counselor will help the campers find a solution to the problem.

What if a camper gets homesick while at camp?
It is completely normal for someone to feel this way especially if it’s their first time away at camp. We have found in our 30 years of holding this camp that the most helpful solution is to STAY BUSY during the down time at the dorm. This situation is where a cell phone is not helpful. Hanging out with friends, signing up for activities, etc. helps, but hanging out in the room and doing nothing only intensifies the homesick feeling. We recommend that campers only call home one to two times during the week, as calling home can also intensify the homesick feeling. Counselors can help in this situation, and we encourage the campers, and parents, to make it thru to the end of the week. It is highly recommended that your child have experience being away from home prior to attending camp. There are no refunds for those campers that leave camp early due to homesickness. Your camper should have some experience being away from home prior to attending camp.

ABOUT PARENT VISITS
Can parents go up to camp floors, stay in the dorm, or have meals in the cafeteria with their camper?
No. For security reasons, check-in and check-out days are the only days parents are allowed on camp floors. Parents are not allowed to live in the dorm, or take meals with their campers during the week. This is a CAMP. Please allow your child to have a true camp experience by interacting with other campers and experienceing a small degree of independance. Part of this is allowing them to be on their own for a short period of time, but knowing that help is available if needed.

Can parents watch camp sessions?
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe any pool session from the spectator seating at the Swim Center. Upon entering the building, please report to the front desk staff, who will direct you to the grandstands.

PARKING
Where can I park at Dobie Center?
Dobie Center is located at the corner of Guadalupe and 21 st Street.   Parking for Dobie Center is available at the Dobie Center parking garage, located at
21st Street and Whitis Street directly across from Dobie Center on the east side of the building. Please note this is a pay garage - there is no free parking for camp. Turn right on 21st from Guadalupe, then right on Whitis. See Google map. Please do not park curbside in "Customer Service Zones" - these spaces are only good for 15 minutes, and the City of Austin actively patrols this area. Exceeding the time limit typically results in a citation.

What about parking on the UT campus?
Parking on the UT campus requires a permit. Please observe posted signs, as parking without a required permit will lead to ticketing and towing.

The Jamail Texas Swimming Center is located on the University of Texas Campus, one block west of I-35 on the northwest corner of the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Red River Street. See Google map.

After 5:45 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, parking is open on a space available basis on the surface lots surrounding the Swim Center, and on San Jacinto Boulevard. Please read all signs carefully as some spaces are reserved "AT ALL TIMES ." Parking in these spaces will likely result in a parking citation.

For the Sunday evening session, parking on campus is open except in spaces noted as "AT ALL TIMES.".

Scratch off permits
MAY be available for sale at the front desk of the Texas Swimming Center at a price of $4 per day. These permits allow you to park all day in the "C-Lot 80" parking located next to the TSC. Please ask at check-in about availability. If scratch-off permits are not available, you will need to use one of the parking garages to park on campus prior to 5:45 p.m. The Trinity Parking Garage is
located at the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Trinity directly across from the Swim Center. Please use the parking garages if you are on campus prior to 5:45 p.m.

The University of Texas Parking and Transportation Services website can provide you with information on campus and visitor parking, parking garage locations, maps, and other important information about parking options. See also the visitor parking map from Parking and Transportation Services.

Sorry, the Camp cannot provide assistance with appeals for any tickets issued by the University of Texas or the City of Austin.

ABOUT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES
What are some of the afternoon field trips?
In the past, we have made trips to the Texas Capitol building, state history museum, IMAX theatre, mini-golf, Barton Springs, Longhorns LTD., Austin Children's Museum, and bowling at the Texas Student Union.

What about in the evening?
Evening activities have consisted of pizza/movie night, scavenger hunt, t-shirt tye dye, Olympian autograph night, and a celebrity night speech and Q & A.

What if my camper is staying more than one session?
Supervised activities are planned for the weekend for those campers staying more than one session, and campers are fully supervised over the weekend. There is an extra $65 fee for this service. If there are no scheduled meets at the Jamail Swim Center, campers will have a Saturday morning training session.

FOR OVERNIGHT/RESIDENTIAL CAMPERS
How do I get in touch with my camper?
You can call the Dobie Center front desk at 512/505-1000 or 800/685-5185. The front desk staff will get your message to our camp mailbox, and we will deliver your message to your camper. In emergencies, the staff will have a cell phone number to call Jon Alter, the camp director, immediately.

Will my child have a telephone in their room?
No. Campers may not bring plug-in phones for their rooms. Cell phones may only be used in the camper's room.

FOR DAY CAMPERS
What time do I need to drop my camper off in the morning? When do I get to pick them up?
Depending on group assignment, campers will need to be dropped off at Dobie Center at either 7:45 a.m. or 8:45 a.m. and should be escorted into the main lobby with their parent/guardian. Pick-up time will be either 8 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Your camper’s group assignment will be given on Sunday evening, and you will be notified of the proper times.

Monday thru Thursday, day campers are ALWAYS dropped off at Dobie Center, and picked up at the Texas Swim Center, unless prior arrangements have been made with the director.

On Friday, ALL day campers will be dropped off at the Texas Swim Center at 9:15 a.m. Camp concludes at 11:30 a.m., and day campers are picked up from the pool.

*FIRST SESSION EXCEPTION: FRIDAY, JUNE 6: Due to the Texas Senior Circuit Championships at the Texas Swimming Center, the Camp will swim from
6-8 A.M. Day campers will be ready to be picked up shortly after 8 a.m. from the pool.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but this is a last chance meet for swimmers to make Olympic Trial cuts, and Trials qualifiers to race before going to Olympic Trials. Please contact the camp director with any questions.

Can day campers take part in the evening activities?
Yes, but arrangements will need to be made in advance with the camp director or their group counselor.

Do day campers need to check in on Sunday?
YES! Day campers check in at Dobie Center from 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. Campers will receive their camp t-shirt, as well as find out their schedule for Sunday evening. They have dinner with camp, and walk to the pool from the dorm for the first stroke session on Sunday night. Day campers are picked up at the pool on Sundays after a short informational meeting with the director and their parents.

What about the weekly schedule?
Once day campers find out their group, they will be given their pick-up and drop-off times on Sunday evening. Day campers follow the same schedule as overnight campers once they are with the camp.

You may download a camp schedule HERE.

What about the Friday schedule?
Day campers should be brought to the Texas Swim Center no later than
9:15 a.m. regardless of their group. Day campers may be picked up at the Texas Swim Center at 11:30 a.m. or shortly thereafter.

ABOUT TRANSPORTATION

How will I get to camp?
Campers are responsible for providing transportation to and from the camp at their own expense. Many campers drive, or fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

What if I fly in to camp?
The Camp provides ground transportation to or from Austin Bergstrom International Airport at a nominal $25 one-way or $35 round-trip fee. Campers flying in as registered unaccompanied minors with the airline are able to be met at their gate, and able to be escorted to their departure gate. Please note this on the Transportation Form. Required fees and arrangements should be taken care of prior to arrival at camp with your airline for campers requiring an airline escort.

Campers not flying as unaccompanied minors will be met outside the security checkpoint area, and should not proceed to baggage claim. A staff member wearing a Longhorn Swim Camp t-shirt and name badge will greet them outside the secured area of the terminal. It is helpful if the camper is wearing a swimming t-shirt or carrying a swim bag. Specific information is included in the pre-registration packet.

What time should I pick my camper up on Friday?
Campers are typically ready to go between 1:30–2 p.m. and may be picked up at Dobie Center. Please arrange to meet your camper in the main lobby as we do not allow campers to wait at street level for pick-up. Please call or email for more information on flight scheduling. There are many camps staying at Dobie, so elevators may run VERY slowly during this time.

*FIRST SESSION EXCEPTION: FRIDAY, JUNE 6: Due to the Texas Senior Circuit Championships at the Texas Swimming Center, the Camp will swim from
6-8 A.M. Overnight campers should be ready to be picked up between
9:30-10a.m. at Dobie Center.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but this is a last chance meet for swimmers to make Olympic Trial cuts, and Trials qualifiers to race before going to Olympic Trials. Please contact the camp director with any questions.

How soon do I need to let the Camp know about my transportation plans? What if my airline plans change after I have submitted my forms or on my check-in day?
We would appreciate knowing your transportation plans as soon as possible. However, we also understand that plans change all the time and sometimes it's necessary to schedule a flight instead of driving. If your airline plans change (flight numbers, arrival/departure times, etc.), or you decide to fly - please let us know of these changes RIGHT AWAY! The pre-registration packet will have contact numbers for Jon Alter, the camp director, on check-in days to reach him in case of delays, cancellations, etc.

Regardless, ANY changes in transportation plans should be communicated to the camp ASAP.

*FIRST SESSION EXCEPTION: FRIDAY, JUNE 6: Due to the Texas Senior Circuit Championships at the Texas Swimming Center, the Camp will swim from
6-8 A.M. Campers will be conclude camp at 8 a.m. Those campers flying out of Austin should try to plan for departure flights beginning at 10 a.m. or later.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but this is a last chance meet for swimmers to make Olympic Trial cuts, and Trials qualifiers to race before going to Olympic Trials. Please contact the camp director with any questions.

ABOUT THE MEDICAL FORMS
Can the forms be altered or modified?
NO! Required forms must be returned with required signatures and information, and with no modifications (wording, sentences crossed out, etc.). Any form received with modifications will not be accepted.
This is a University of Texas mandate, not just camp policy.

Do I really need a physician’s signature on these forms?
YES! The forms do require a physician’s signature. Physicals completed after June 1, 2007 are required. Your campers physical should be dated no earlier than one year from the first day of their camp session (example: a camper attending session three (June 15-20) will need a physical dated NO EARLIER than June 15, 2007). If your camper has had a physical in the last 12 months prior to the first day of their camp date, physicians may just sign off on the form. A copy of the physical form will also be accepted. If your camper’s medical forms are not on file, they will not be allowed to participate in camp activities. This is a University of Texas mandate, not just camp policy.

Does my camper need to have insurance to participate?
YES! Insurance coverage is required, and a copy of your insurance card or policy will be asked for in case of injury or illness. Letters from parents accepting all financial responsibility cannot be accepted. If you do not have insurance, you may want to check with a local agent for information about a temporary policy. No one may attend camp without insurance! This is a UT mandate, not just camp policy. Forms submitted without insurance information will be considered incomplete.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT THE LONGHORNS SWIM CAMP
The camp is currently seeking mature, motivated, responsible, and team-oriented individuals to be a part of its 30th year!

A minimum of 16 mature, young adults are employed as counselors/coaches to supervise, coach, befriend, parent, fairly discipline and generally apply guidance to a maximum of 165 campers per week. The main objective is to provide a safe environment in which young people can learn, have a good time, and be excited about swimming.   Coaching on deck requires following the head coaches lead, but the counselors are encouraged to call upon their own experiences while coaching. Counselors supervise the workout prescribed by the Head Coaches.

While "on duty", a counselor is expected to be available to the campers and to enjoy the interaction. During recreational or non-workout times, counselors will be assigned different areas of responsibilities on a rotating basis. These include such areas as supervision of the dorm pool, game room, volleyball and basketball courts, camp floors, and mall area (the dorm is above a small two-story mall). Field trips may include taking campers on various field trips in Austin, and to the doctor as necessary. There is also the check-in and check-out process, airport pick-up and drop-off, paperwork, organization, and van driving.

The duty schedule revolves around the four ability groups in the camp. There are three-five counselors assigned with each of the Blue (fastest), Red, White, and Super (fast) groups. Group assignments rotate so that all counselors will work with all age groups and ability levels.

A tentative time off schedule for a staff of 16 is as follows: Monday through Friday, four counselors will be off from 4:00 p.m. until noon the following day. The schedule will rotate thru the week. A group of counselors will be off all day on Saturday and a group off Friday evening (after airport runs and the next session's camper packets have been completed) and all day Sunday until 5:00 p.m. Everyone will be back on duty for the first camp meeting and stroke session on Sunday evening and the Monday morning session. A staff meeting will be held every Sunday during dinner or after the camp meeting. Weekend time off will also rotate. There will always be either the head counselor or an assistant head counselor on duty.   The Director is available 24 hours a day.

All applicants must complete and return the Camp Employment Application, UT Employment Application, and Security Sensitive Form. All applicants must pass both a social security number verification and criminal background check performed by the University of Texas Human Resources Department, prior to employment being finalized. Current copies of First Aid, CPR, and/or Lifeguarding / Safety Training for Swim Coaches certifications must be sent in with all applications, and certifications must be current thru camp.   It is highly recommended that applicants be current registered coaches with USA Swimming. Applicants must agree to work in an alcohol and drug-free environment upon being hired.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old and completed at least two years of college. It is also preferred that each counselor has competitive swimming, and coaching / teaching, or camp counselor experience. Counselors arrive in Austin on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.   Transportation from the airport is provided. Required orientation begins on Wednesday, May 28. Camp officially begins Sunday, June 1, and ends Friday, June 27. Counselors may depart on Sunday, June 29.

Starting salary is $1800 ($450 per camp session), in addition to room (private, with bath), board, local telephone, parking, and recreational pass. Staff is also outfitted in NIKE apparel.   Salary is paid in two installments thru direct deposit - June 22 and July 6. Counselors will need to plan for this payment schedule. Travel expense help of up to $300 will be provided in the form of a reimbursement check.   A copy of the flight itinerary or departure point (if driving) is required.
